AEO vs SEO: the key differences and how to win at both
AEO vs SEO explained: the key differences in goals, metrics and writing, and how a small business can rank in search and be cited by AI.
Compare the best answer engine optimization tools, free and paid, to track AI citations and check your visibility in ChatGPT, Perplexity and Google.

Answer engine optimization tools help you see whether AI assistants and search features use your pages. Some are free and some cost hundreds a month. Here is what each kind does, and which ones are worth using first.
Start with free answer engine optimization tools: Google Search Console, Bing Webmaster Tools and the AI assistants themselves.
Paid AEO tools track many prompts, brand mentions and cited sources, which is useful once you have many pages or competitors.
Their numbers come from samples of prompts, so use them to spot trends, not as exact counts.
No tool fixes a page. The writing and structure do that, and the tools tell you whether it worked.
They are tools that show whether AI assistants and search features use, mention or cite your pages, and which questions you could answer better.

Answer engine optimization, or AEO, is the work of making your pages easy for search tools and AI assistants to quote. AEO tools help with the part you cannot see by looking at your website alone: what ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, Copilot and Google's AI features actually say, and whether they use you.
They fall into four jobs:
They cannot make an assistant recommend you. Nobody outside the AI companies controls that. Treat a tool as a thermometer, not a cure.
Four free options cover what most small businesses need. Use them for a few months before you pay for anything.

Free, and the most important. It shows the searches your pages appear for, clicks, and which pages are indexed. Google counts visits from its AI features in the Performance report under the Web search type, together with normal results. Use the URL Inspection tool to check whether a page is indexed and request indexing for new ones.
Also free. It shows how Bing indexes your site, lets you submit your sitemap and URLs, and includes an AI Performance report, currently in public preview, that shows how often your site is cited in Microsoft's AI-generated answers, including Copilot.
The most direct test costs nothing. Ask ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini and Copilot the questions your customers ask, a few times each, in a private window. Note whether you are named, whether the facts are right, and which sources they cite. Our free AI visibility check does a version of this for you.
A spreadsheet with the date, the question, the tool and what it said is enough to see change over time. It is basic, and many businesses never need more.
They run your list of questions across several AI tools automatically, every day or week, and report mentions, citations, position and sentiment against competitors.

Checking by hand gets slow once you have dozens of questions, several competitors or more than one location. Paid answer engine optimization tools automate that. Typical features include:
These tools sample a set of prompts, and AI answers change from run to run. A score of 40 does not mean you appear in 40 percent of everyone's searches. Use the numbers to spot direction and gaps, and test the important questions by hand too.
| Metric | Semrush AI Toolkit | Ahrefs Brand Radar | Peec AI |
|---|---|---|---|
| Main focus | Visibility score, prompts, brand sentiment | AI share of voice, most-cited pages | Visibility, position, sentiment, sources |
| Platforms it names | ChatGPT, Gemini, Google AI, Perplexity | Google AI, ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, Copilot | ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini |
| How it is sold | A toolkit within Semrush | An AI add-on on paid Ahrefs plans | A separate product with its own pricing page |
| Site check for AI crawlers | Yes, in Site Audit | Not part of Brand Radar | Not stated on its site |
| Fits best if you | Already use Semrush | Already use Ahrefs | Want AI tracking on its own |
We describe what each company says on its own pages in October 2026. We have not been paid by any of them, and features and prices change often.

The table above reflects what Semrush, Ahrefs and Peec say about their products on their own websites at the time of writing. It is not a hands-on review, and we have no commercial relationship with any of them.
This is a fast-moving category with many newer products. If you try others, ask three questions: which AI platforms does it cover, how often does it run your prompts, and can you see the full answers it recorded, not just a score?
Most small businesses should stay with the free tools. Consider a paid tool when you track many questions, work in a competitive market, or report to clients.

You have a small site, a handful of important questions and a monthly routine of checking them by hand. The free tools and a spreadsheet will tell you everything a paid tool would, only slower.
Most paid tools offer trials or tiers. Begin with your twenty most valuable questions, run them for a month, and see whether the data changes what you do. If it does not, cancel.
Set up Search Console and Bing Webmaster Tools, submit your sitemap, and start a tracking sheet of ten customer questions.
Rewrite your three most important pages around real questions, then ask the same questions again and note changes.
If you are tracking more than you can handle by hand, trial one paid tool with your top twenty questions.
The best tool in the world cannot fix a page that does not answer the question. Fix the page first, then measure.

It is tempting to buy a tool before fixing the content. Resist it. If your pages do not answer real questions directly, a dashboard will only show you that you are missing.
The steps that move results are the same ones in our guides: use customers' questions as headings, answer each in the first sentence, add specific details, keep your facts consistent, and make sure crawlers can read the page. Our guide on how to optimize your website for ChatGPT, Perplexity and AI search walks through them, and AEO vs SEO explains how the two fit together.
If you have many pages, a technical site or no time to keep it up, an agency can do the fixing as well as the measuring. Our SEO and AI search service does exactly that, and we will tell you plainly if the free tools are enough for you.
Our free AI visibility check shows whether ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, Copilot and Google AI Overviews mention your business, what they say and what to fix first.

Start with free ones: Google Search Console, Bing Webmaster Tools and the AI assistants themselves. Paid options include the Semrush AI Visibility Toolkit, Ahrefs Brand Radar and Peec AI, which track AI mentions across many prompts.
Yes. Search Console shows how your pages perform in Google, including its AI features, and Bing Webmaster Tools has an AI Performance report in public preview. Asking the AI assistants directly is free too.
Both offer AI visibility features. Semrush has an AI Visibility Toolkit, and Ahrefs has Brand Radar, which it sells as an add-on on paid plans. Check each company's current pricing and coverage.
They run a set of prompts across AI tools and count how often your brand appears compared with competitors. Because it is based on sampled prompts and AI answers vary, treat it as a trend, not an exact figure.
Most small businesses do not at first. Free tools and a tracking sheet are enough for a handful of key questions. Consider a paid tool when you track many questions, compete with many brands or report to clients.
Search Console and Bing Webmaster Tools for data, the AI assistants for spot checks, a spreadsheet for tracking, and an editor who rewrites headings around real questions. Add a paid tracker later if you need one.
They show direction better than exact numbers, because AI answers change between runs and tools sample prompts. Cross-check important questions by hand.
No. They measure and report. Nobody outside the AI companies controls what these tools show, so be cautious of any tool or agency that guarantees a mention.
