ChatGPT, Perplexity and Google's AI features all read websites before they answer. If they cannot reach your pages, or cannot make sense of them, you are left out. Here is how to optimize your website for AI search, step by step.

Key takeaways

Each AI search tool has its own crawler. Make sure robots.txt and your hosting let Googlebot, Bingbot, OAI-SearchBot and PerplexityBot in.

Keep important content as real text on the page, with clear headings and direct answers that can be quoted.

Local businesses and online stores have extra steps: accurate listings, product data and reviews.

Check the results by asking the tools themselves, and with Google Search Console and Bing Webmaster Tools.

It means making your site easy for AI search tools to reach, read and quote, so they describe your business accurately and send people to you.

Three steps: find, read, quote

"AI search" covers the tools that answer a question in sentences and cite their sources: ChatGPT search, Perplexity, Google AI Overviews and AI Mode, and Microsoft Copilot. Before they answer, they look for pages, read them and decide which ones to use.

To optimize your website for ChatGPT, Perplexity and AI search, you make each of those steps easy: the tools can get in, the pages make sense to a machine, and the answers they need are written clearly. None of it replaces normal SEO. It builds on it.

This guide is practical. If you want the background first, read what answer engine optimization is and how it fits with SEO and GEO.

Step 1: Let the AI search crawlers in

Each AI search tool uses its own crawler. If your robots.txt file or your hosting blocks it, your pages cannot appear in that tool's answers.

A robots.txt file allowing Googlebot, Bingbot, OAI-SearchBot and PerplexityBot

Open yourdomain.com/robots.txt and check that none of these crawlers is disallowed. Then check your hosting or CDN: some security settings and "bot protection" features block unfamiliar crawlers by default.

What each company says

  • OpenAI says sites that opt out of OAI-SearchBot will not be shown in ChatGPT search answers. GPTBot is a separate crawler used for training models, so you can block GPTBot and still allow OAI-SearchBot.
  • Perplexity says PerplexityBot is the crawler that surfaces and links websites in its search results, and that it is not used to train AI models.
  • Google says there are no extra requirements for AI Overviews or AI Mode: a page needs to be indexed and eligible to show a snippet in normal Search. Its Google-Extended setting controls use in some other Google AI systems, not Search.

OpenAI and Perplexity both note that robots.txt changes can take about a day to take effect.

Help them find your pages

Submit your sitemap in Google Search Console and in Bing Webmaster Tools. Link your important pages from your menu and from each other, so crawlers can reach them in a few clicks.

Step 2: Make every page readable by a machine

Keep your important content as real text in the page, with clear headings, fast loading and structured data that matches what the page says.

Opening hours written as text, which search tools can read, next to opening hours in an image, which they may miss

AI search tools can only use what they can read. A few things make that easy:

  • Real text, not pictures of text. Opening hours, prices, service areas and key facts should be written on the page, not only shown in an image or a PDF.
  • Content that does not depend on scripts. Some crawlers do not run JavaScript the way a browser does, so content that only appears after scripts load may be missed. Check by viewing the page source, or with the URL Inspection tool in Search Console.
  • One clear topic per page. A page for each service and each location, with a title and main heading that say exactly what it is.
  • Speed and mobile. Slow, broken or awkward pages are crawled less and trusted less.
  • Structured data that matches the page. Organization or LocalBusiness on your home and contact pages, Service on service pages, Article on posts, Product on product pages. Google says the markup must match the visible text, and that no special AI-specific markup is needed.
AI can only recommend what it can read.

Step 3: Write content that AI search can quote

Use your customers' real questions as headings, answer each one in the first sentence, and add specific details nobody else has.

An AI assistant answering how to optimize a website for Perplexity

This is the part people mean when they ask how to optimize content for ChatGPT and AI search results. AI tools favour pages that answer clearly and add something real.

Answer first

Put the question in a heading and the direct answer in the first one or two sentences. Then explain: what it depends on, exceptions, an example. This is the core habit of answer engine optimization.

Be specific

Generic pages give an assistant little reason to use you. Say what is included, who it is for, where you work, how long things take and what affects the price. Original detail, such as your process, your checklists and real examples from your work, is what makes a page worth citing.

Show who is behind it

Add an author or company name, a date and an "updated on" date to guides. Keep your About and Contact pages complete. These help both people and machines judge whether a page is trustworthy.

Keep facts consistent

Your business name, address, phone, services and opening hours should read the same on your site, Google Business Profile, social profiles and directories. Conflicting facts make it harder for an AI tool to describe you with confidence.

Step 4: Extra steps for local businesses and online stores

Local businesses need accurate listings and reviews. Online stores need accurate product data that AI shopping tools can read.

AI search optimization for local businesses

When someone asks an assistant for "the best [service] near me", the answer leans on what is said about you across the web. Keep your Google Business Profile complete, with the right categories, hours, photos and services. Make your details identical across directories. Build a page for each main service and area you cover. And collect reviews that describe the actual work, because a specific review says far more than "great service".

How to optimize for ChatGPT shopping and Perplexity for ecommerce

OpenAI says ChatGPT picks products based on relevance and on structured product information from merchants and other providers, such as price and description. Merchants can apply to send OpenAI a direct product feed, and Shopify stores are already connected through Shopify's catalog. OpenAI also says product results are not ads. For any AI shopping tool, including Perplexity, the basics are the same: complete product pages with clear names, prices, stock, specifications and real photos, Product structured data, and reviews.

Your AI search checklist

Check your robots.txt

Make sure Googlebot, Bingbot, OAI-SearchBot and PerplexityBot are not blocked, then check your hosting's bot settings.

Submit your sitemap twice

Add it in Google Search Console and in Bing Webmaster Tools.

Fix one key page

Rewrite its headings as questions, answer each one first, and put key facts in plain text.

Step 5: Check what AI search says about you

Ask the tools the questions your customers ask, record the answers, and repeat monthly alongside Search Console and Bing Webmaster Tools.

The most direct test is to ask. Open ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini and Copilot in a private window, ask the questions a customer would ask, a few times each, and note whether you are named, whether the details are right, and which sources are cited. Our guide on how to get ChatGPT to recommend your business walks through this check in detail.

Then use the free reports. Google Search Console counts appearances in Google's AI features within its Performance report, and Bing Webmaster Tools has an AI Performance report (in beta) showing how often you are cited in Microsoft's AI answers.

What about llms.txt?

llms.txt is a proposed file that summarises a site for AI tools. Google says no special AI files are needed for AI Overviews or AI Mode, and no major AI search tool has said it relies on llms.txt to decide what to show. It does no harm, but do the steps above first.

If you would rather we did the checking and the fixing, our SEO and AI search service covers both, or start with the free AI visibility check.

Frequently asked questions

How do I optimize my website for ChatGPT search?

Allow OAI-SearchBot in your robots.txt and hosting settings, keep important content as real text, use clear headings with direct answers, and keep your business details consistent. OpenAI says sites that block OAI-SearchBot are not shown in ChatGPT search answers.

How do I optimize my website for Perplexity?

Allow PerplexityBot, which Perplexity uses to surface and link websites in its results. Then make pages easy to read and quote: clear headings, direct answers, specific details and accurate facts.

Should I block GPTBot?

That is a separate choice. GPTBot collects content that may be used to train OpenAI's models. Blocking it does not remove you from ChatGPT search, which uses OAI-SearchBot.

Do I need an llms.txt file?

No. Google says no special AI files are needed for its AI features, and no major AI search tool has said it relies on llms.txt. It does no harm, but crawler access and clear content matter far more.

How do I optimize content for AI search engines?

Use real questions as headings, answer each one in the first sentence or two, add specific details only you can give, show who wrote it and when, and keep it updated.

Does AI search optimization work for local businesses?

Yes. Keep your Google Business Profile complete, make your name, address and phone identical everywhere, build a page per service and area, and collect detailed reviews.

How do I get my products into ChatGPT shopping?

Keep product pages complete and accurate with Product structured data. OpenAI lets merchants apply for a direct product feed, and Shopify stores are already connected. Product results are not paid placements.

How long does it take to show up in AI search?

Crawler changes can take about a day, and new or updated pages need to be recrawled. Being named in answers usually builds over weeks to months. Check monthly and look for trends.
