AEO vs SEO explained: the key differences in goals, metrics and writing, and how a small business can rank in search and be cited by AI.

SEO gets your page into search results. AEO gets it quoted as the answer. They are not rivals. Here is how AEO vs SEO differs in goals, metrics and writing, and how to do both without doubling your work.
SEO aims to rank your page. AEO aims to get a clear answer from your page quoted by search features and AI assistants.
The metrics differ: SEO counts rankings and clicks, AEO looks at citations, mentions and answer appearances.
You cannot skip SEO. Answer engines mostly quote pages that are already found, crawlable and trusted.
One rewrite serves both: real questions as headings, direct answers first, specific details and clean structure.
SEO helps your page get found and ranked. AEO helps your page get used as the answer. The first makes the second possible.

Search engine optimization, or SEO, is the long-established work of helping your pages appear and rank in search results. Answer engine optimization, or AEO, is newer. It is the work of writing and structuring your pages so a search feature or AI assistant can take a clear answer from them and repeat it.
Search "AEO vs SEO" and you will find people treating them as a choice. They are two layers. SEO is the foundation, because a page must be found, crawled and trusted. AEO sits on top, because being found is no longer enough when the reply appears before the list of links.
For a three-way view that includes generative engine optimization, read our guide to SEO vs AEO vs GEO. This article goes deeper on the two-way comparison: the metrics, the writing and what changes in your workflow.
| Metric | SEO | AEO |
|---|---|---|
| Goal | Rank your page in the results list | Get a clear answer quoted from your page |
| Where it appears | Search results pages | Snippets, AI answers and voice replies |
| Page style | Built around topics and keywords | Built around questions and direct answers |
| What you measure | Rankings, clicks and visits | Citations, mentions and answer appearances |
| Main risk | Not being found or trusted | Being found but never quoted |
SEO asks "will this page rank?" AEO asks "will this page be the source of the answer?" Those need different habits.

A page can win one goal and lose the other. An SEO-minded page covers a topic thoroughly, uses the right terms in titles and headings, loads fast and earns links. All good. An AEO-minded page also does something specific: it puts the question in a heading and the direct answer in the first sentence or two beneath it.
Take a kitchen remodeling page. The SEO version has a heading like "Remodeling timelines" and a long introduction about the process. The AEO version has the heading "How long does a kitchen remodel take?" and opens with: "Most kitchen remodels take six to twelve weeks, depending on the scope and how long materials take to arrive." Then it explains what changes the answer. The second page is easier for a person to scan and a machine to quote. (Use your own real timeframes, not these.)
Because answer engines draw on pages they can find. A page with weak SEO rarely gets quoted, and a page with strong SEO but buried answers often gets skipped. You want both.
SEO is measured in rankings, clicks and visits. AEO adds citations and mentions, which are harder to count and change from run to run.

Google Search Console shows impressions, clicks, average position and which pages are indexed. Bing Webmaster Tools shows the same for Bing. These are the metrics SEO has used for years, and they are reliable.
These are fuzzier, for two reasons. First, Google counts visits from its AI features in the same Web search report as normal results, so you cannot always separate them. Second, AI assistants give different answers from one run to the next. In practice, AEO measurement is a mix of:
Some people read an answer and never visit. Being named and remembered still matters, because the person often contacts the business they just read about. Watch enquiries as well as visits.
Rank to be found. Answer to be chosen.
Yes. Ranking gets you considered. Being quotable gets you chosen.

This is the most common AEO surprise. A page ranks on page one and never appears in an AI answer or snippet. The usual causes are simple:
The reverse also happens. A page with modest rankings can be quoted if it answers a narrow question very clearly. That is the opportunity for smaller sites: be the clearest answer to a specific question.
| Metric | Before | After |
|---|---|---|
| Heading | Remodeling timelines | How long does a kitchen remodel take? |
| Opening line | A long introduction about the process | A one-sentence answer with a real timeframe |
| Details | Mixed into long paragraphs | A short list of what changes the timeline |
| Facts | In an image or PDF | Written as plain text on the page |
| Updated | No date shown | Author, date and "updated on" shown |
Links remain part of SEO and of how Google judges prominence. No AI company has said backlinks are required for AEO, but being mentioned elsewhere helps machines confirm who you are.

Backlinks, links from other sites to yours, are a long-standing SEO signal. Google lists links from other websites among the things that make a business prominent in local results, for example.
For AI assistants, no company has published a rule that backlinks are required. What we can say sensibly is this: assistants tend to use sources they can confirm from more than one place. When other reputable sites mention and link to your business, you are easier to confirm, and your SEO is stronger too. That is a reason to earn real mentions through directories you belong to, local organisations, partners and useful guides, not a trick to hurry along.
Paid or spammy links can hurt SEO and do nothing for AEO. The slower route, being useful enough that people reference you, is the one that lasts.
AEO does not replace SEO, needs no special file, and cannot be guaranteed by anyone.

It does not. Answer engines quote pages they can find and trust, which is what SEO delivers. Drop SEO and AEO has nothing to stand on.
There is no required file. Google says no extra files or markup are needed for its AI Overviews and AI Mode beyond being indexed and eligible for a snippet in normal Search. The proposed llms.txt file is not something any major AI search tool has said it relies on. Our guide to optimizing your website for ChatGPT, Perplexity and AI search covers what does matter.
Nobody outside these companies controls what they show, so anyone who guarantees a placement is selling something they cannot deliver. A good agency will explain what it will change, how it will measure, and what it cannot promise.
Make sure your key pages are indexed, load quickly, work on mobile and are in your sitemap in Search Console and Bing.
Use your customers' words, and answer each in the first sentence or two beneath it.
Search Console for the numbers, and the AI assistants for whether they use you. Note what changed.

No. AEO builds on SEO. Answer engines mostly quote pages that are already found, crawlable and trusted, so SEO remains the foundation.
SEO is measured in rankings, impressions, clicks and visits. AEO adds whether tools cite or mention you and whether their facts about you are right, which is harder to count and varies by run.
No AI company has said backlinks are required. Links still matter for SEO, and mentions on reputable sites make it easier for tools to confirm who you are.
AEO is about being the quoted answer in snippets and AI replies. GEO, generative engine optimization, is about being named and recommended by AI assistants. The groundwork overlaps heavily.
Yes. A page can rank while its answer is buried, vague or hidden in images, so a clearer page gets quoted instead. Direct answers and plain-text facts fix most of it.
It is mostly good writing and clean structure, which many small businesses can do themselves. The harder part is measuring it, because AI answers vary from run to run.
SEO basics first, so your pages are found and trusted. Then rewrite your most important pages around real questions with direct answers, which serves both.
Search engines must recrawl a page, which can take days to weeks, and AI answers change often. Check monthly and look at trends over a few months.
