TikTok vs Instagram Reels for business: audiences, reach, engagement and local selling compared, plus how to post one video on both the right way.

TikTok and Instagram Reels look almost the same: short vertical videos in an endless feed. For a small business, they behave differently. One is better at reaching strangers, the other at turning followers into customers. Here is how they compare in 2026 and how to choose, or use both without doubling the work.
Half of US adults use Instagram and 37% use TikTok, according to Pew Research in 2025.
TikTok brand accounts averaged a 2.5% engagement rate in 2026, against 0.45% on Instagram, per Socialinsider.
TikTok is stronger for discovery. Instagram is stronger for warm audiences, DMs, local customers and repeat buyers.
You can post the same video on both, but upload a clean file without the other app's watermark.
Start with Instagram Reels if your customers are local or already follow you. Start with TikTok if you need reach from people who do not know you yet.

Both apps reward short, useful, watchable videos. The difference is what happens after someone watches.
If you only have time for one, pick the app your customers already use most, then add the second once you have a steady rhythm.
Instagram reaches half of US adults, TikTok just over a third. TikTok skews younger, especially for daily use.

Pew Research Center surveyed 5,022 US adults between February and June 2025. It found that 50% use Instagram and 37% use TikTok, while YouTube (84%) and Facebook (71%) remain the largest.
Age makes a big difference. Pew reported that 80% of adults aged 18 to 29 use Instagram, compared with 19% of those 65 and older. For TikTok, roughly half of 18 to 29 year olds use it every day, against 5% of adults 65 and older.
So if your best customers are over 45, Instagram and Facebook usually reach more of them. If they are under 30, TikTok deserves a serious look.
TikTok posts get more engagement per follower, but Instagram brands tend to post more often and keep followers longer.

Socialinsider tracks organic posts from brand accounts with 1,000 to 1 million followers. Its 2026 benchmarks put average engagement by followers at 2.50% on TikTok and 0.45% on Instagram, both slightly down on the year before.
It also reported more average views per post on TikTok (6,496) than on Instagram (3,403) in 2025, though each platform counts views differently.
TikTok gives a new account a better chance of being seen by strangers. Instagram engagement is lower on average, but the people who engage are more likely to be followers, customers and locals you can talk to directly.

TikTok finds you new people. Instagram helps you keep them.
Usually Instagram. Locals already use it, DMs make enquiries easy and location tags help nearby people find you.

Cafes, salons, clinics, gyms, trades and restaurants usually get more from Instagram, because the goal is not millions of views. It is the right few hundred people nearby who will visit, book or call.
TikTok can still work locally, especially with younger customers, but views are more likely to come from people far away who will never buy. For local search, also keep your Google Business Profile active. Our local SEO checklist covers the basics.
Product brands can do well on both. For B2B, neither replaces LinkedIn, but Reels and TikTok can build a founder's profile.

For physical products, short demos, behind-the-scenes clips and unboxings work on both apps. Test the same videos on both for a month and keep the one that brings sales, not just views.
For B2B, short video is useful for showing expertise and personality, but your buyers are more likely to act on LinkedIn. Our guide to LinkedIn ads for small business covers paid options there.
Yes, and most small businesses should. Edit once, export a clean file and upload it natively to each app.

Reposting your own video is fine. What to avoid is downloading a TikTok, with its watermark, and uploading that to Instagram.
Instagram said in April 2024 that it would favour original content, replace reposted clips in recommendations with the original and stop recommending accounts that repost others' content 10 or more times in 30 days. That rule targets other people's content, but a clean, native upload is still the safest route for your own.
Long enough to deliver one clear idea. Instagram Reels can now run up to 3 minutes, but most business videos work best much shorter.

Instagram raised the Reels limit from 90 seconds to 3 minutes in January 2025, announced by Instagram's head, Adam Mosseri. TikTok also allows longer uploads.
Length is not the goal, though. Most small business videos land best when they make one point quickly: a tip, a demo, a before and after or a customer story. Our short-form video guide covers ideas and formats, and our guide on how often to post covers the rhythm.
Doing it yourself costs time. Freelancers and agencies cost money, but save hours and usually lift quality.

Filming and editing two or three short videos a week can easily take several hours. That is fine if you enjoy it, but it adds up for a busy owner.
Many businesses start in-house, then bring in a freelancer or agency for planning, editing or full production once they know what works. Our guide to social media marketing costs breaks down typical budgets, and our social and short-form video service covers planning, filming and editing.
Choose the one your customers use most. Add the second once you post steadily.

After 30 days compare DMs, calls, bookings and sales, not just views.

It depends on your goal. Instagram Reels is usually better for local businesses and turning followers into customers. TikTok is better for reaching new, often younger, audiences.
TikTok, on average. Socialinsider's 2026 benchmarks put brand engagement at 2.5% by followers on TikTok and 0.45% on Instagram.
Yes. Export one clean file without any watermark and upload it natively to each app, with captions written for each audience.
Instagram said in 2024 that it favours original content and replaces reposted clips with the original in recommendations. Uploading your own clean file avoids problems.

Neither replaces LinkedIn for B2B, but short videos on either can build trust in a founder or team. Start with LinkedIn, then repurpose.
