Nobody can guarantee a citation in a Google AI Overview. What you can do is meet Google's stated requirements, rank well for the questions your customers ask and make your pages easy to quote. This guide separates what Google says, what studies suggest and what is guesswork. Written October 2026.

Key takeaways

Google says there are no extra technical requirements: a page must be indexed and eligible to show with a snippet.

An Ahrefs study found 76% of cited URLs also ranked in the top 10 for the query.

No special markup or AI file is needed, according to Google.

Treat everything beyond Google's own guidance as a hypothesis, and measure it.

What does it mean to be cited in an AI Overview?

Google's AI Overviews show a summary with links to supporting pages. Being cited means your page is one of those links.

A search showing an AI Overview, its citation links and that nothing is guaranteed

Google's documentation on AI features says that for a page to be shown as a supporting link, it must be indexed and eligible to be shown in Google Search with a snippet. It adds that there are no additional technical requirements, and that meeting all requirements does not guarantee crawling, indexing or serving.

Google also says clicks from pages in AI Overviews are "higher quality", with people more likely to spend time on the site. That is Google's claim, and independent studies have found overall click rates fall when a summary appears, so we treat it carefully.

What does Google say you need to do?

Follow normal SEO best practices. Google says no special optimization, markup or AI file is needed.

A list of five points from Google's guidance

Google's documentation says there are no additional requirements to appear in AI Overviews or AI Mode, and no special optimizations are necessary. It also says there is no special schema.org structured data to add, and that you do not need new machine-readable files, AI text files or markup.

It points site owners to the same basics as ever: let Googlebot crawl, link pages well, give people a good experience, keep important information in text, keep business information current and follow search policies. Create helpful, people-first content.

Be careful with anyone who sells "AI Overview optimization" as a secret formula.

What do studies say about which pages get cited?

Most cited pages also rank well in normal search. Ahrefs found 76% of cited URLs were in the top 10.

A table of Ahrefs findings on cited pages ranking in the top 10

Ahrefs' guide, published in January 2026, reports that 76% of cited URLs also ranked in the top 10, based on 1.9 million AI Overview citations, and that the top cited URL had a median organic position of 2.

It also reports that AI Overviews appeared for about 21% of keywords in a 146 million SERP study and for far more question-style queries, at 57.9%. Dates for these underlying studies are not stated in the article.

These are correlations. They say pages that rank well tend to be cited, not that ranking causes citation, and AI Overview behavior changes often.

Rank first. Then be easy to quote.

Which questions trigger AI Overviews?

Mostly informational, question-style searches. Longer queries trigger them more often than short ones.

A table showing AI Overviews appear most often for questions and long queries

Ahrefs found AI Overviews appeared far more for questions and long queries. In its data, 99.9% of keywords that triggered an Overview were informational.

For a small business, that means the best chance is on helpful pages that answer real customer questions, rather than on pages selling a product. Write about the "how much", "how to" and "what is" questions your customers ask.

How should you write pages that are easy to cite?

Answer the question directly near the top, then support it with clear, sourced detail.

Three steps: use the question as a heading, answer briefly, then add sources and dates

Ahrefs recommends answering the query directly and early and avoiding padding. It also found little correlation between word count and citations, so longer is not better.

A practical structure:

  1. Use the question as a heading. For example, "How much does a website cost?"
  2. Give a short, direct answer first. Two or three sentences.
  3. Add detail, sources and dates. Name where each number comes from.
  4. Cover related questions. Ahrefs reports pages that rank for related "fan-out" queries are cited more often.
  5. Keep it current. Update figures and note the date.

Do schema, llms.txt or other AI markup help?

Google says no special markup is needed. Ahrefs says the effect of schema is unproven.

A comparison of what Google and Ahrefs say about schema and AI markup

Google says structured data should match visible text and that no special schema is required for AI features. Ahrefs treats schema as low-risk hygiene and says its direct effect on AI Overviews is unproven.

Use structured data where it helps normal search results, such as FAQ or local business details that match your page, and do not expect it to unlock citations.

Studies find a link between brand mentions and visibility, but correlation is not proof.

Text reading: Correlation is not proof.

Ahrefs reports that branded web mentions correlated with AI Overview appearance at 0.664, branded anchors at 0.527 and YouTube mentions at 0.740 in its brand factor study.

Correlation does not show cause. Well-known brands probably earn both more mentions and more citations. Still, being mentioned on respected sites, directories and video platforms is good practice for any business. Our directory and listing work is part of this.

How do you check whether you are being cited?

Search your target questions, note who is cited and watch Search Console for changes.

A five-step monthly check for AI Overview citations

Google says traffic from AI Overviews is included in the overall Web search type in Search Console's Performance report, so you cannot filter it separately. Track queries and clicks over time and keep your own log of what you see.

Frequently asked questions

How do I get cited in Google AI Overviews?

Be indexed and eligible for snippets, rank well for the question and give a clear, direct, sourced answer. Google says there are no extra requirements, and nothing guarantees a citation.

Is there special markup for AI Overviews?

No. Google says there is no special schema or AI file needed. Structured data should match the visible page text.

Do I need to rank in the top 10?

Often. An Ahrefs study found 76% of cited URLs also ranked in the top 10, but that is a correlation, not a rule.

Does word count matter?

Ahrefs found almost no correlation between word count and citations. Answer clearly rather than padding.

Does schema help me get cited?

Its effect is unproven according to Ahrefs. Use it where it helps normal search and keep it accurate.

Can I opt out of AI Overviews?

Google says you can limit what is shown with nosnippet, data-nosnippet, max-snippet or noindex. These affect Search more widely, so use them with care.

How do I track AI Overview traffic?

Google says it is counted in the Web search type in Search Console, so you cannot filter it on its own. Track queries and clicks over time.

Can anyone guarantee citations?

No. Be wary of any provider that promises a citation or a guaranteed place in AI answers.
